Guide to Green Beauty

With Earth Day on April 22nd, we’d like to share a few tips in helping you make the switch to leading a more eco-friendly lifestyle this year. By making these small changes, it can go a log way in helping Mother Earth breathe easier.

Hydrate (Through Reusable Cup & Straw of Course!)

Sipping through a straw isn’t just a trick makeup artist’s use so lipstick won’t come off. By drinking through a straw whenever possibly, you not only keep your pout perfect but you also help in the green effort of less plastic waste. Don’t forget to drink out of your reusable/travel cup too!

Eat Clean

By not only eating cleaner, juicing and shopping with reusable bags, you’ll cut down on plastic wrapping and packaging along with putting more wholefoods into your body (think fruits and vegetables!)

Turn Off the Water

For every minute you have the water funning, two gallons of water go down you drain. To conserve water, multi-task – leave your face wash on while you wash the rest of your body, shampoo while you shave your legs. Or, simply set a kitchen timer to not spend too much time in the shower.

Be a Label Hound

Check the ingredients of your skin and shower products. Chemicals can be harmful not only to your skin but to the water and environment it is transported to. Try our popular H&H Brightening Polish, not with bio-friendly microbeads!

H&H Science products are dermatologist tested and approved, Ph balanced, cruelty free, chemical paraben free, non-comedogenic, medical-grade, made in the USA, and distributed locally by a family-owned business.

Top Makeup Spring Color Trends for 2018, According to Makeup Artists

As weather warms up, its time to not only switch over your wardrobe, but transform you makeup routine as well. Play up the spring moods and temperatures and enjoy these subtle changes to your eye shadow, lips and foundation as you create a warmer, softer and fresher look.

Here’s a guide to trends you might see – and try for yourself!

Pastels with a Pop of Color

Pastels for spring are not a new concept but you’ll definitely see more muted shades this season. We recommend using a light wash of pink on your lips (Try our Liquid Lipstick in Kitten Pink) and some blush (Our Powder Blush in the color Peony) to give your cheeks a pink flushed look.

The Return of Twiggy Lashes

Natural lashes are on their way out this season, and in with bold, 1960s Twiggy-inspired eye looks. To pull it off at home, begin with a thickening fiber-based mascara (H&H Science Lash Thickener) followed by a bold, volumizing mascara (H&H XLXL Mascara). Don’t be afraid to do more than one layer of mascara too!

Bright Colors in Surprising Places

In addition to the spring pastel hues, bold eye shadow designs have become braver this season. Give your eyes an ‘instant wakeup call’ by trying a bit of color under your eye’s water line and only at the inner corners. Try our new Eyeshadow Kit that you can build your own kit and choose your own colors!

Ultraviolet Eyes

With purple being the Pantone’s color of the year, utilize it as a way to draw dramatic attention to your eyes. Smudge a purple eyeliner (H&H Gel Liner in the color Florentine)

The Return of the Bullet Lipstick

Move aside lip balms, glosses and stains! 2018 marks the return of the traditional bullet lipstick. This means going back to your mom’s trusted purse staple. Matte is still ruling the roost but more wearable formulas give the lips more life than the flat mattes of winter. Look for bright pinks, corals and beige nudes. We recommend our Luxury Matte Lipstick, Satin Lipstick and Cream Lipstick lines.

Strobing Is The New Contouring: How To Perfect The Look

What is strobing?

Strobing is essentially the application of a shimmery highlighter on the high planes of the face, where light would naturally bounce off. Unlike the concealer-bronzer-contour makeup techniques that look great in photos, but unnatural and heavy in daylight, strobing works beautifully in real life because light is always catching and reflecting off your skin. It is a much easier technique to learn and the highlighter simply amps up the reflective glow.

How to Strobe:

Strobing should be the final step in your makeup routine. It goes on top of all the other products you are wearing, such as foundation, blush, etc.

Before you strobe, it’s really important to “mattify” the areas you don’t want emphasized, such as your forehead, chin and the tip of your nose. Otherwise, your whole face will have a greasy appearance. You will want to do this before you apply your foundation, tinted moisturizer or BB/CC cream. You can also use it over foundation in order to further mattify certain areas after makeup application. My favorite oil-absorber is our H&H Science Ultimatte Finish Powder.

Watch our video below on how to strobe using our H&H Science Luminizer Stick.

Our NEW H&H Science Luminizer Stick is a creamy, conditioning stick illuminator that highlights cheekbones, diminishes darkness under the eyes and provides the skin with a healthy glow.  It contains Vitamins A, C & E that help to protect cells from free radical damage and aloe to soothe and condition skin.

It is Hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, paraben-free and packed with antioxidants!

What Could Be Causing Acne Breakouts

Acne can be hard to treat. You may have tried multiple acne treatments, yet your skin is still aggravated. While you are taking the right steps with trying to find the acne treatment that will help to clear your acne, there are quite a few things that contribute to acne breakouts that you may not even realize.

1. Skin Care Products That Clog Your Pores

There are certain ingredients in your skin care products that are known for clogging pores and causing breakouts. While it may be difficult to remember and look for the certain ingredients that are “pore cloggers,” looking for products that are “non-comedogenic” will make it a lot easier. “Non-comedogenic” means that it does not clog pores. This will ensure that the products you are using are not making your acne worse.

2. Sleeping With Your Makeup On

Leaving your makeup on overnight will hinder your skin’s renewal and clog your pores. Bacteria will then build up and cause inflammation, which can lead to acne. It is very important to make sure you are washing your face before bed, no matter how tired you may be! Your skin will thank you.

3. Your Pillowcase

Speaking of nighttime, it’s important to think about where your face is laying for the 7-8 hours you sleep at night. Your pillow can accumulate bacteria, dust and dead skin cells. It is important to wash your pillowcase as often as possible!

4. The Sun

While being in the sun increases your risk for developing skin cancer, it can also cause oil glands to become overactive, which can then lead to breakouts. Choosing an oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreen will help protect your skin without causing a break out.

5. An Unhealthy Diet

What you eat changes the consistency of the oil on your skin, making it more likely to clog pores. Some food also tips your skin’s natural balance in a way that flares acne. Sticking to a healthy, low-fat, low-sugar diet will lessen flare-ups and make it easier to control with acne treatments.

6. Your Beauty Tools

Everything that comes in contact with your skin should be cleaned often to keep bacteria levels low. This includes any skin care devices, makeup brushes and even your phone screen. If you’re not cleaning your makeup brushes, try out our NEW H&H Science Heart Shaped Brush Cleaner. With this proper cleaning, your brushes are guaranteed to last longer than ever before, while preventing bacteria buildup.

Step 1: Wet your brush’s bristles under a running faucet with lukewarm water

Step 2: Use a gentle soap and lather on your makeup brush

Step 3: Gently scrub makeup brush on Heart Shaped Brush Cleaner

Step 4: Rinse the brush by scrubbing on the Heart Shaped Brush Cleaner under running water

Step 5: Squeeze excess water from brush, reshape and lay flat on a clean surface to dry
