Heather Funk, founder of H&H Science, has more than 20 years of experience in the beauty industry and has lectured at numerous events on the business of beauty and the H&H Science brand. She launched her H&H Skin Science brand over 12 years ago and has expanded it to include a full mineral make-up cosmetics line and botanical based hair care line.

She and her husband, Aaron, are the co-owners of the H&H Science brand of products, and own and operate two boutiques in Ohio, as well as a full online retail store. They have also expanded their business and now offer select salons the opportunity to carry the H&H Science brand of products.

Heather enjoys educating clients and other salons on the H&H Science brand and is passionate about helping women and men look and feel their very best. Her number one passion is her family and spending quality time with them. Their son, Austin, is Heather and Aaron’s true pride and joy. They look forward to him being a part of the family business.

We had the chance to interview Heather on this Boss’s Day, allowing our readers and customers to get to know her on a more personal level. The transcription of the interview is below, enjoy!

Q: How long have you been interested in the importance of proper skin care?

Heather: “I have been into skincare since my early teen years— having a mom as a dermatologist helped me start a proper skin care regimen from an early age. She is my mentor and role model. She instilled my passion for skincare and all things beauty.”

Q: What does your skin care routine look like?

Heather: “My Perfect Formula includes all of the skin care essentials. Here are my daily essentials:

Q: Do you have dry, oily or combination skin?

Heather: “Combination Skin: I am oily in the T-Zone and dry on the cheeks!”

Q: What is your favorite H&H Science skin care product?

Heather: “I have so many…but if I had to pick one it would be my BB Cream. I never leave the house without my SPF 50+ on! This gives me a flawless finish with the universal tint, lightweight moisture and all day oil control.”

Q: What is your favorite H&H Science makeup product?

Heather: “My H&H Science Baked Hydrating Mineral Powder in Sun Dune. I use this everyday over my BB Cream. It provides all-day coverage and provides me with a luminous glow because of the light-refracting particles!”

Q: What is one item that you can’t leave home without?

Heather: “My H&H Science makeup! I always have my makeup bag in my purse so I can touch up on-the-go.”

Q: What is your favorite late-night snack?

Heather: “Alaska.”

Q: What is at the top of your bucket list?

Heather: “Traveling the world and exploring new places!”

Q: What is the last book you read?

Today Is The Day: Tips From My Trainer

Hi everyone!

Hutch (1 of 2)

My name is Kim Kessler. I am a personal trainer and nutrition counselor at Hutch Sports in Medina, Ohio.  I am extremely passionate about working with women (and girls) of all ages.  I want to empower women to believe in themselves and be the best version they can be throughhealthy eating and strength training.

As women, it is harder for us to build and maintain muscle.  We have more of the hormones that cause us to hold on to fat.  With that, we also have low levels of testosterone, the hormone that assists in building muscle.  When we reach the age of 50, we begin to lose 10% of our muscle mass each decade.  To combat this, we need to strength train and consume enough quality protein. Strength training also helps maintain bone density, in order to prevent osteoporosis.

In regards to nutrition, eating protein with every meal is important, as it helps to maintain muscle and will keep you feeling fuller, longer. Aim for 20-30 grams of protein per meal. Protein includes your meats, seafood, eggs, tofu, beans, and peanuts.

Secondly, NEVER skip breakfast!  It is important to get your metabolism going again in the morning after a night of sleep.  Try to eat frequently throughout the day with small, controlled meals. Do not go more than four hours without eating.  If you eat your three main meals throughout the day, you can enjoy two protein based snacks.  A great snack can be greek yogurt or hummus.

Make sure you are drinking enough water.  Every metabolic process in our body requires water.  If you are dehydrated, you will hinder the weight loss process.  Research shows that individuals that drink two cups of water before their meals consume 75% less calories than those who do not.

You need to move!  Every day you should do 30 minutes of physical activity.  Go enjoy a walk, ride a bike, or jog.  Add strength training 2-3 times a week.  The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn.  Some women worry that they will “bulk up, which is not the case.  Genetics prevents this “bulk,” as we simply do not have enough testosterone to build huge quantities of muscle mass.  You will tone your body and get healthy in the process.  You can begin strength training by doing body weight exercises, then progressing to dumbbells.  Once you begin, you will actually look forward to exercising because you will love the way it makes you feel afterward.  I always hear people say that they are too tired to exercise.  I make sure to tell them that when you start exercising, you will be less tired!

According to a Chinese proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best day is today.”

So with that being said…make today that day!

I know we all need a treat once in awhile.  Here my recipe for Protein Brownies!
