7 Things You Should Be Doing Every Day for Clear Skin

Clear skin is something that we all strive for. Not only does your skin impact your self-confidence, but it also influences your social habits, psyche and can trigger anxiety. With so many factors working against us—pollution, hormones and other pore-clogging elements, accomplishing the task of clear and blemish-free skin may seem somewhat impossible. Although there are so many harmful skin aggressors surrounding our daily lives, there are, thankfully, a few lifestyle changes that can get your skin back on track. According to dermatologists, here are the top skin care tips to achieve healthy and clear skin.

1. Use an Appropriate Facial Cleanser for your Skin

With so many different cleansers being advertised everywhere we look, it is important that you chose one that is beneficial for your skin type. Whether you have dry, oily, combination or sensitive skin, you must take this into consideration when selecting your everyday facial cleanser. Doing so allows the right balance of ingredients to work its magic and cleanse your skin efficiently and effectively.

2. Use a Sonic Cleansing System

Along with the appropriate facial cleanser for your skin type, using a sonic cleansing system takes off more makeup, bacteria and dirt from your skin, compared to just using the cleanser alone. It provides a deep clean and exfoliates your skin’s surface, leaving your face smoother and softer, ultimately influencing a clearer complexion.

3. Apply Retinoids Before Bed

Retinoids provide a plethora of benefits for your skin, including evening out discoloration and brightening skin tone, reducing wrinkles, preventing fine lines and unclogging pores in order to make them look smaller and reduce acne. Applying a retinoid, which best for those who do not have ultra-sensitive skin,  as part of your nighttime skin care routine can help reduce fine lines, unclog pores and even out your skin tone,  in order to create clearer and healthier-looking skin.

Try: Retinol Plus Smoothing Serum

4. Get a Good Night Sleep

Although we all love sleeping, it isn’t as easy to get the amount sleep as we need in a given night. When you are sleeping, your skin restores itself. Therefore, lack of sleep can lead to a more tired-looking complexion, puffy under-eye bags, dark circles and even breakouts. Creating a nighttime routine that is conducive to relaxing and getting your body ready for a good night sleep can significantly help not only the ease of falling asleep, but also staying asleep through the night.

5. Always Use Sunscreen

While using sunscreen every day and applying it generously is important, many sunscreens are oil-based, which can clog your pores and create new blemishes. Finding a sunscreen that works with your skin type and protects you from not only the sun, but from blemishes as well, is actually easier than you think. Make sure to also choose an SPF that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays.

Try: H&H Science Sheer Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF 50+

6. Avoiding Picking, Popping and Poking

We know—it’s hard to resist the urge to pop your pimples. Although this probably isn’t your first time hearing this, a little reminder will hopefully do the trick. Don’t pick, poke or pop your pimples. If you have a blemish that you are desperate to pop, try using a spot treatment or cream instead. Popping will only do harm, while spot treatments are designed to clear existing blemishes and prevent future blemishes from forming.

Try: H&H Science Spot Treatment Gel

7. Use a Toner

If your morning and evening skin care routines don’t already include using a toner, today is the day to start. Choosing a toner with glycolic acid or salicylic acid unclog your pores for clearer skin. Toners can also balance your skin’s natural pH levels, while soothing your complexion and minimizing breakouts.

Try: Salicylic Treatment Pads

What to Pack for Any Summer Weekend Getaway

From lounging poolside or soaking up the sun by the ocean or lake, there’s no better reason to get out of town (and away from your computer and work routine.)

If you are also looking to save some money, time, and avoid a luggage mishap, packing light for these small getaways is the way to go. You can use this Sonic Device 300x before it runs out of power, so feel free to power up and leave the charger at home.

Your Entire Skin Care Routine – in TSA-Approved Sizes

Prioritizing your skin’s health (even on vacation) is totally fine. Taking the time to empty all of your skin care products into the travel-approved size bottles is such a hassle. The good news? What to Look For When Buying Sunscreen

Everyone knows that a good sunscreen is a healthy skin care essential all year long, but there’s a lot of information that most don’t know when buying sunscreen. Sunscreen is not a one-size-fits all, and there are thousands of different types of sunscreens to fit different needs – for everyday wear, water-resistant or sweat-proof protection, or incorporated in their makeup products.

Whatever your sunscreen need is, here is how to ensure you find your next favorite sunscreen so you can be safe and protected when outside.

Start with SPF 50+

Both UVA and UVB rays can lead to skin cancer (this is old news), plus UVA rays can cause fine liens and wrinkles, therefore speeding up the signs of aging. UVB rays are those that cause sunburns. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends a minimum of 30 SPF but here at Trillium, we always recommend a minimum of 50+ to help protect against 97% of the sun’s UVB rays. Also, if you are fair-skinned, always go for a higher SPF.

Know Your Sunscreen’s Key Ingredients

By taking a quick look at your sunscreen’s ingredient list camp help ensure you are getting the quality and appropriate coverage you need. First off, look for the term “broad spectrum” as it ensures you’ll have both UVA and UVB protection. Mineral sunscreens, or physical sunscreens, work by using natural minerals such as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide to reflect the sun’s rays from your skin. All of our sunscreens at H&H Science are broad-spectrum and are non-comedogenic (will not clog pores).

Consider Your Skin Type

Many sunscreens are designed specifically to help those with dry, oily or sensitive skin types. For dry skin, avoid sunscreen sprays or gels with alcohol. For sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens are good bets with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. I recommend our H&H Sheer Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF 50+ with active ingredient of Zinc Oxide 13.75% and Green Tea Polyphenols to help sooth red or sensitive skin.

Consider Stocking Up, Especially During “Outdoor” Season

If you aren’t applying your sunscreen often or re-applying at the right time, you won’t be able to get all the protection your sunscreen can offer. Your sunscreen should be applied at minimum, every two hours. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you might need to stock up a bit more in order to last.

Know How to Build Sunscreen Into Your Makeup Routine

A great and easy way to add a healthy sunscreen habit into your day is to build it into your morning routine. There are plenty of foundations out there with SPF in it but I always recommend a mineral foundation with SPF as it is healthier for your skin, and won’t cause acne as these formulas are composed of organic minerals and are also oil free – they don’t support the growth of bacteria. I love to recommend both our H&H Tinted Brightening BB Cream SPF 50+ as it is a universal tinted foundation/SPF/Moisturizer all in one, and our H&H Mineral Sheer Tint as it evens out skin tine with a sheer, natural radiance.

Pick a Sunscreen You Enjoy Wearing

I always say to my clients, “choose a sunscreen that you like to wear,” because it increases your chance of actually wearing sunscreen to protect your skin. By choosing a sunscreen with nice perks (like SPF 50+, spray or tinted BB cream) that could make you more excited about re-applying.

How to Make Your Makeup Last (For Oily Skin Types)

When you have oily skin, applying makeup can be a real challenge, as you constantly have to deal with midday shine and trying to find the right makeup formula and combinations that actually stay put. It’s so important to choose the right products that work with your specific skin type’s needs. If not, you’ll forever be struggling with that unflattering oily shine or your foundation’s formula separation, which can accentuate fine lines and wrinkles.

When trying to find the right makeup that will work well with your oily skin, I always recommend to any client I see, that having the proper skin care regimen is the first step in keeping your skin clean, healthy and well-moisturized. When you properly take care of your skin and before applying your makeup, making sure that your skin is prepped, your eye shadow and foundation will last longer, and help control that unwanted shine.

Skip the Foundation for Midday Touchups

Common mistakes people with oily skin make when applying makeup to fix that midday shine is applying makeup directly back onto the oily makeup-layered skin. The constant layering of makeup on top of your now oily skin just leads to an unnatural, cakey appearance. Instead, try an oil-absorbing, translucent powder like our H&H Ultimatte Finishing Powder to soak up any excess oil. By using a product like this that is specifically designed for oil absorption, your foundation and color will not be disturbed during the touchup process.

Exfoliate at Least 3 Times a Week

Like I said earlier, using the correct skin care products for your skin type prior to your makeup application is crucial! People with oily skin should always go for a lightweight and oil-controlling formula and look for ingredients that will purify and mattify without irritating the skin. Look for ingredients such as salicylic acid and clays (such as Kaolin Sulfur). Our H&H Pore Minimizing Masque is a fabulous green clay mask that is enhanced with mint and minerals to help clean out your pores while absorbing excess oil.

Another tip: by exfoliating at least 3-5 ties a week with an acid, you will help enhance your makeup’s longevity and appearance. The removal of those dull surface skin cells (which makeup products tend to attach to), your skin will be more smooth and clean – the ideal canvas for makeup application.

Don’t Forget to Hydrate!!

So many of my clients come in and tell me that they completely avoid any type of facial moisturizer, because they don’t want to add any product to their face that will add to the oiliness (which is a HUGE mistake!). By conditioning and hydrating your skin, it allows for a smoother and more even makeup application. No matter if you have oily or dry skin, all skin types need daily hydration. For oily skin types, I always recommend a lightweight option like the H&H Ultra Lite Oil Free Moisturizer or the H&H Skin Quench Hydrating Serum to help balance the skin’s natural moisture content without weighing it down.

A key ingredient to look for is hyaluronic acid, which is a humectant that binds water to skin and helps prevent water loss.

Foundation Primer is a Must…

Priming your face before applying makeup is so important for oily skin types when impacting the look and wear of your makeup. Our H&H Pore Perfecting Face Primer is always a go-to as it is an oil-free primer that helps smooth your skin’s texture while also containing Dermat Complex for shine control and Salicylic Acid to eliminate pore blockage.

…So Is an Eyeshadow Primer

Having a quality Eyeshadow primer is so important, especially for anyone who experience the ‘eyeshadow-melting-and-slipping-off-your-face’ look. Prep your oily lids with the H&H Botanical Shadow Primer and create a perfect canvas for creaseproof, long-lasting eyeshadow application.

Choose a Satin or Matte Finish When It Comes to Foundation

Having a liquid, BB or powder-based foundation that provides a satin or matte finish works well with oily skin types. Our H&H Pressed Powder Foundations deliver the right amount of coverage while still allowing your kin to breathe. It also provides buildable, sheer-to-full coverage with a semi-matte finish.

Don’t Forget to Set Your Makeup

As mentioned above in my first tip, setting and touching up midday makeup is an important makeup application step for all skin types – especially oily skin. Finishing and setting powders help set your makeup after you’ve applied your primer, foundation, and concealer. H&H Ultimatte Finishing Powder helps combat and eliminate shine while the translucent powder helps to absorb excess oil and set your makeup for all-day wear.

Skin Care for Moms

As a modern mom, we have to do it all; including taking care of our skin. We might not all look like these celebrity moms like Halle Berry or Reese Witherspoon (a full face of makeup and a trendy outfit are definitely not necessary when I’m taking my son to school in the morning!), but other than that, we try our best to slap on some makeup and hide those sneaky wrinkles. Today, I’d like to answer some of the common questions I get, and give you some of my best tips on making your skin look radiant and healthy. Enjoy!

#1: What is a quality skin care line for mom’s looking to get real results?

When it comes to quality skin care, I go straight for good and medical-grade ingredients. You can find your typical skin care products at any drugstore but if you want real results, I recommend H&H Science products. All H&H Science products are medical-grade, meaning that they have a higher strength active ingredient than you would find in a drug-store brand, that are results oriented treatments. They also have superior delivery systems, allowing for the active ingredients to get below the surface of the skin. By using medical-grade skin care products; you are making an incredible investment in your skin.

#2: What is the biggest mistake you see women commit in their skin care routine?

Constantly rotating or changing products. The more you change your products and brands, the more sensitive your skin is to the ingredients. This has contributed to the rise of rosacea in the recent years. I recommend sticking to a full-proof and personalized skin care regimen that was customized for your exact skin and skin care needs. Stop in or call and schedule a 1-on-1 consult with myself. I’ll customize a complete skin care regimen for your unique skin type. We will review your regimen together to ensure you know when to use your products, how to use them and the benefits that they are providing.

#3: What skin care products should women use every day no matter what?

Apply a full spectrum SPF 50 or greater sunscreen. There is no question that the sun is the #1 cause of aging skin as well as skin cancer. By applying sunscreen daily, you are helping to prevent and protect your skin. Try our H&H Tinted Brightening BB Cream SPF 50+ as it is a great makeup and sunscreen combo!

#4: What are the major problem areas that you see women facing in their skin?

Fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth are the most common concerns I see. They are one of the hardest to treat and can usually require laser treatments. To help prevent additional wrinkles from appearing, start by wearing sunglasses early to help avoid under eye wrinkles. We also recommend both a morning and night time application of an eye cream to help combat wrinkles. I recommend our best-selling H&H Hydrating & Firming Eye Cream in the morning as it helps reduce puffiness and dark circles and our H&H Total Eye Repair at night as it contains hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate and seal moisture in, and all-trans-retinol to promote smoother, firmer skin.

#5: How do you feel about more drastic measures such as chemical peels and Botox tot make skin appear younger?

I am a huge advocate for both chemical peels and Botox, and I do not consider either drastic. Botox is one of the most common procedures that I do. Botox is not a filler, but a protein that relaxes underlying muscles. It works by blocking impulses from the nerves to the muscles that create expression lines. It is the leading treatment for erasing and softening wrinkles and frown lines and can be used to effectively improve the appearance of wrinkles in a matter of weeks.

Chemical peels are great for maintaining your skin care regimen. For patients that get chemical peels, here at Trillium Creek we build the strength of the peel each time they come so they don’t leave with a red peeling face but with a beautiful glow.

#6: What are some natural remedies to improve the condition of your skin?

Despite marketing hype assigned to a single ingredient, research is clear that using a range of beneficial ingredients, is always best to keep skin at it’s healthiest. And skin care will never be as simple as any single ingredient – just a no single food or nutrient can help keep your body healthy.

You need to apply a variety of vitamins and nutrients to your skin, both inside and out, to your skin on a daily basis. That’s why I always recommend taking vitamins for your skin to help clear and nourishes the skin and protect from a wide variety of skin issues. I recommend our H&H Anti-Aging Formula as it is a natural dietary supplement that can be taken orally to promote skin radiance and helps maintain a more youthful and healthy appearance.

#7: How should women combat multiple skin issues, such as acne and wrinkles at the same time?

I always recommend glycolic acid for my clients to use daily. Glycolic acid combats acne and has incredible anti-aging qualities. It removes dead skin and over time, promotes growth of collage. For a full regimen, I recommend our H&H Clear Skin Peel Kit which includes our 10% Glycolic Acid Peel Pads. Or more a more introductory product to Glycolic Acid, I recommend our H&H Glycolic 10% and Antioxidant Facial Cream. A lightweight glycolic facial cream that contains vitamins A, C and E, green tea and coenzyme Q-10 to assist in minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone, and reduce free-radical induced sun damage.
