Summertime Sadness: Hair Edition

School is in session, fall sports have started and autumn is almost upon us. It is no secret that the harsh sun has an effect on your skin, with UV exposure being the basis of so many skin conditions and diseases. Aside from harming your skin, it also does a number on your hair. Now that the fun summer activities are coming to a close, it is time to repair your hair from the aftermath of severe exposure to UV rays and chemicals. From the hot sun to chlorinated water, summer can leave your hair damaged and dry.

The sun does more than just fade the color of your hair, whether natural or color-treated. It can leave your hair dry and craving moisture. Replacing this lost moisture is pivotal, in order to avoid dry and brittle hair. Enriched with Argan Oil, H&H Science’s Moisturizing Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner helps hydrate your locks, while also providing your hair with a natural UV protectant.

While it isn’t summer without swimming pools, chlorinated water can be incredibly drying and irritating. As chlorine is used to kill bacteria in pools, it is no surprise that it causes a lot of damage on your hair. Your hair begins to absorb this chemical, stripping your strands of its natural lubricant. This often leads to split ends and frequent breaking. You don’t need to run to the salon to get your hair chopped off after the first sight of split-end mess. Taking care of your hair and providing it with the moisture it needs will help nourish your hair and bring it back to life.

As most of you know, swimming pools can turn your hair into a brassy green color. Although most believe that this is from the exposure to the chlorine itself, it is actually chlorine’s interaction with copper and other metals that causes this. Chlorine causes small amounts of metal to enter the water, which in turn, tints your hair this brassy color.

Detoxing your hair after all of the damage that summer brings is crucial. H&H Science’s Detox My Hair Kit works to cleanse and purify your strands, while leaving it manageable and shiny. The Deep Detox Treatment that is included in this kit is a keratin-infused conditioning treatment that is supercharged with proteins to restore moisture, strengthen, stop frizz and reduce breakage, which is a perfect way to remove summer damage and start off fall with shiny and healthy hair.

Recover, Hydrate & Treat

The 3 Keys To Your Best Skin This Fall

As the summer sun sets and the season starts to change, our tans fade and we are left with the effects of the summer sun. Brown spots, freckles and soft wrinkles under our eyes appear, reminding us of the time spent outdoors. Reversing the damage requires maintaining a skincare regimen that includes quality, medical grade skincare ingredients, as well as incorporating medical grade anti-aging treatments and procedures.

Recover

RetinolPlusSmoothingSerum3x(HH).png

Recovering from the effects of the summer sun requires key ingredients, such as Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid. Glycolic Acid is best for those with sensitive skin types who have normal-to-dry skin. Salicylic Acid peels are acidic solutions used to rejuvenate the surface of your skin. The solution acts on the outermost skin layers- causing them to disintegrate and be “peeled” away to reveal the underlying, unaffected skin.

Recovering the health of your skin is now available in the comfort of your home with our H&H Science Glycolic Cleansing Pads. These Glycolic pads will cleanse, degrease, and freshen the skin. It gently exfoliates dead skin and will remove surface debris and oil. Witch Hazel, a proven astringent, helps reduce surface oil and refine pore size. In addition to these glycolic pads, using a retinol every night is key to recovering the health of your skin. As our H&H Science Retinol Plus Smoothing Serum contains a unique combination of retinol and smoothing serum, it helps to enhance the skin, making it smoother and more evenly toned while reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Hydrate

The strong summer sun dries out your skin. Transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, happens in both the summer and winter. In order to restore your natural glow, a hydrating moisturizer with key antioxidants, such as Vitamin A, C, E and Green Tea, is necessary. The ideal moisturizer should be selected according to your skin type. Heavier moisturizing creams are ideal for dry skin types, while serums and lotions are ideal for normal to oily skin types.

Hydrating and firming around the eye areas requires Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic Acid has been nicknamed by the press as, “the key to the fountain of youth.” H&H Science Hydrating & Firming Eye Serum contains Hyaluronic Acid and is an ideal moisturizing cream that tightens and firms around the eye.

Treat

Treating deeper wrinkles and more advanced sun damage, as well as facial blood vessels, requires the use of the latest advances in medical grade treatments and procedures.

Our Photo Facial Microneedle Tool  combines conventional micro needling with the added benefit of color therapy. Color therapy is used to stimulate the biological activity of the skin at the cellular level. The needling forms micro channels in the skin, allowing increased product penetration. Penetration is further enhanced by the activity of the wavelengths used during the Photon therapy.

This ‘collagen induction therapy’ device effectively improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by plumping up the skin, to create a more youthful appearance. The Photo Facial Microneedle Tool is highly effective in improving a wide variety of skin conditions, such as: rough skin texture, enlarged pores, sun damage, wrinkles, scarring (acne, chicken pox, surgical), stretch marks and lax skin.

Today Is The Day: Tips From My Trainer

Hi everyone!

Hutch (1 of 2)

My name is Kim Kessler. I am a personal trainer and nutrition counselor at Hutch Sports in Medina, Ohio.  I am extremely passionate about working with women (and girls) of all ages.  I want to empower women to believe in themselves and be the best version they can be throughhealthy eating and strength training.

As women, it is harder for us to build and maintain muscle.  We have more of the hormones that cause us to hold on to fat.  With that, we also have low levels of testosterone, the hormone that assists in building muscle.  When we reach the age of 50, we begin to lose 10% of our muscle mass each decade.  To combat this, we need to strength train and consume enough quality protein. Strength training also helps maintain bone density, in order to prevent osteoporosis.

In regards to nutrition, eating protein with every meal is important, as it helps to maintain muscle and will keep you feeling fuller, longer. Aim for 20-30 grams of protein per meal. Protein includes your meats, seafood, eggs, tofu, beans, and peanuts.

Secondly, NEVER skip breakfast!  It is important to get your metabolism going again in the morning after a night of sleep.  Try to eat frequently throughout the day with small, controlled meals. Do not go more than four hours without eating.  If you eat your three main meals throughout the day, you can enjoy two protein based snacks.  A great snack can be greek yogurt or hummus.

Make sure you are drinking enough water.  Every metabolic process in our body requires water.  If you are dehydrated, you will hinder the weight loss process.  Research shows that individuals that drink two cups of water before their meals consume 75% less calories than those who do not.

You need to move!  Every day you should do 30 minutes of physical activity.  Go enjoy a walk, ride a bike, or jog.  Add strength training 2-3 times a week.  The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn.  Some women worry that they will “bulk up, which is not the case.  Genetics prevents this “bulk,” as we simply do not have enough testosterone to build huge quantities of muscle mass.  You will tone your body and get healthy in the process.  You can begin strength training by doing body weight exercises, then progressing to dumbbells.  Once you begin, you will actually look forward to exercising because you will love the way it makes you feel afterward.  I always hear people say that they are too tired to exercise.  I make sure to tell them that when you start exercising, you will be less tired!

According to a Chinese proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best day is today.”

So with that being said…make today that day!

Vitamin C Shopping Spree

Vitamin C is one of the most important micronutrients, as it benefits your immune system, reduces your risk of heart disease and prevents wrinkled and saggy skin! It is recommended that you consume at least 65 to 90 mg of Vitamin C per day. It is found in numerous tasty foods, making it that much easier to eat something good for not only your body, but your skin as well.

In order to keep it short and sweet, the following are just a few of the foods that are high in Vitamin C, and can also be added into recipes to make delicious and healthy meals:

Kale: Just one cup of kale contains 134% of the Vitamin C you need daily. This dark, leafy green is perfect to add to your salads.

Berries: Blackberries, blueberries and strawberries are all packed with Vitamin C, with strawberries containing the most. There is 17% of the daily Vitamin C you need in just one strawberry, therefore you only need six to get enough for the day!

Kiwis: Kiwis contain 64 mg of Vitamin C per fruit, meaning just one kiwi will get you the daily recommended amount of the important micronutrient.

Bell Peppers: Colored bell peppers contain 183 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams of peppers. This is more the 3 times the amount that is recommended per day.

Citrus Fruits: Grapefruits and oranges contain the same amount of Vitamin C, while lemons and clementines deliver a lower amount (roughly 60-75% of the recommended value).

Broccoli: Broccoli is packed with antioxidants AND Vitamin C. One cup of chopped and steamed broccoli contains 135% of your recommended daily dose of Vitamin C.

Try these recipes for a meal packed with Vitamin C!
