How To: Aging By Decade

As we age and our bodies change, our skin care products should change too. The same cleanser you used in your 20s might not work as well on your skin when you are in your 30s. During different stages of life, we have certain skin conditions and concerns. It is important to be aware of your skin during these phases, and use products that are applicable to your skin type and concerns.

20s

In your 20s, you can still get acne breakouts, especially if this is something you struggled with as a teen. Cleansing and moisturizing are pivotal in your skin care routine, as well as taking the steps to prevent acne. Although fine lines and wrinkles may not be of concern, it is a good time to start preventing aging before it is too late. Adding retinol to your nighttime routine works wonders in preventing both acne and aging. This vitamin A derivative can help prevent and treat clogged pores, while exfoliating excess pigment and sunspots, as well as building new elastin and collagen. Your 20s is also a good time to begin making sunscreen a habit. Applying it as your last step of your routine in the morning will help prevent photoaging and the development of fine lines and dark spots (as well as preventing skin cancer of course).

30s

In your 30s, aging starts to creep up. Not only does your career and personal life get more intense and hectic, but your once youthful skin now has a few fainted laugh lines and dark spots. While your 30s is a great time, it is also a lot of work. Although this stress does have an affect on your skin, but there are still chances to fight these early signs of aging. By now, you’ve hopefully got cleaning, moisturizing and protecting your skin with sunscreen daily down pat. Now, adding in a mix of exfoliation twice a week will keep your skin clear and smooth. As stress may be at an all-time high, the skin under your eyes is usually the first area to show signs of poor skin health and stress. Adding an eye cream to your routine will help boost collagen and elastin production.

40s

By the time you hit your 40s, your skin is a reflection of your skin care routine over the past few decades. The hormones and stress from your 30s carry into your 40s, while noticeable signs of aging begin to appear. Luckily, there are still ways to keep your skin concerns under control. Continuing to apply sunscreen during your morning routine is crucial, as sun exposure is a top cause of aging. Beginning to use a prescription-strength retinol, if you haven’t already, is also important, as it helps even out skin tones and stimulates the collagen in your skin. In your 40s, your skin may begin to have a certain dullness to it. Hydration is key to improving this concern, as using moisturizers and serums will help give the healthy look you are striving for.

50s

In your 50s, sagging and thinning skin begin to surface. The hormone decline that comes along with menopause creates a drastic change to our skin and body, making it essential that you consider maintaining your skin’s health as top priority. Dryness is also a common condition in your 50s, so using products that are infused with antioxidants and humectants will keep your skin nourished and radiant. Using a retinol during your nighttime routine promotes collagen production and cell turnover, helping to slow down the aging process. Therefore, no matter what product you choose, make sure you’re looking for two things: collagen production and hydration!

60s+

In your 60s, your skin becomes more sensitive than before, so using harsher prescription-strength products should be taken down a notch, by either switching to a gentler product or reducing the amount of times you use it. The sagging, thinning and dry skin from your 50s will continue in your 60s and beyond, therefore repairing and hydrating will remain crucial. Preventing additional sagging by using a hardworking serum can be helpful, using this product on your neck and chest as well. While we want to achieve younger-looking skin, and ‘trick’ people into thinking we are a decade younger than we are, it is far more important to be sure that you are maintaining beautiful and healthy skin that you are confident in.

As I am sure you noticed retinol was discussed in almost every decade as an important product for your skin: don’t forget that our Retinol Plus Youthful Peel Kits will be on sale this week- August 29th – 31st. This high-strength, two-step peel kit delivers noticeable anti-aging and skin smoothing benefits, and improves the appearance of pigmentation, fine lines and texture. It also enhances the tone and texture of your skin, while unclogging pores and promoting a healthy radiance.

What Is In Your Acne Treatment?

Acne is frustrating. There is no doubt about it. It is one of the most common skin concerns affecting children, teens, adults, and even older adults, across all ethnicities. The most important step toward clearer skin is finding the right product for you. Finding the product that will be best for you also means understanding the key ingredients in the acne treatment product, including what they do and how they work.

1. Salicylic Acid

How It Works: Salicylic acid dissolves oil, debris and dead skin cells from inside the pores, while exfoliating dead skin cells on the surface. Although it penetrates oil-filled pores, making it effective for those with oily and acne prone skin, it is also safe to use on even the most sensitive skin types.

Why We Love It: Salicylic acid is safe to use on most skin types in without overdrying the skin. It is a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient in acne treatments, aiding in the reduction of breakouts.

What We Recommend: Salicylic Treatment Pads

2. Benzoyl PeroxideSensitiveAcneClean.png

How It Works: Benzoyl peroxide effectively penetrates the pores, immersing the follicle with oxygen, which then kills the bacteria below the skin’s surface.

Why We Love It: Benzoyl peroxide works on contact with the skin, which makes it an amazing ingredient for cleansers, as it spends so little time on the skin before it is rinsed off .

What We Recommend: Sensitive Acne Cleanser

3. NiacinamideEnrichedSuperRich.png

How It Works: Niacinamide aids in the reduction of breakouts by easing inflammation and preventing water loss. It’s anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and hydrating benefits also promote a more even skin tone.

Why We Love It: By including niacimide in products, the skin’s moisture content is normalized, helping prevent further breakouts by reducing excess oil from being produced.

Makeup Tips & Tricks for Oily Skin

It is no secret that applying makeup to oily skin isn’t an easy task. Unfortunately for many, their makeup doesn’t last as long, as well as it leaving an unflattering oily shine throughout the day. There are many factors to consider, as finding the right makeup for your skin type is only half of the solution. By also making sure you’re keeping your skin clean, moisturized and healthy, the makeup will last longer and help control the unwanted shine that seems to come along with makeup on oily skin types.

Don’t touch up with more foundation.

Throughout the day, you may have the urge to touchup your makeup with a pressed powder or foundation. By layering more makeup onto your oily skin, it often leads to a ‘cakey’ appearance. Instead, try an oil-absorbing powder, such as the Ultimatte Finish Powder  to soak up excess oil and leave your skin with a smooth and even toned finish.

Even oily skin needs moisture.

By moisturizing and conditioning your skin, it allows for an even makeup application, which can make it look more natural. Although all skin types need daily hydration, it’s important that those with oily skin use a lightweight moisturizer, such as Ultra Lite Oil Free Moisturizer. This will ensure a balance of your skin’s natural moisture content, without weighing it down and making it oily.

Cue the primer.

Primer has a big impact on the wear of makeup. Pore Perfecting Face Primer is an oil-free primer that also helps smooth the skin’s texture and reduces the look of pores and lines instantly. It also contains Dermat Complex, which helps with shine control, as well as Salicylic Acid to eliminate pore blockage.

Primer…for eye shadow?

Prepping your eyelids is essential for oily lids. Botanical Shadow Primer provides the perfect canvas for smooth, long-lasting eyeshadow. It also helps create a crease-free an smudge-proof look. Eyeshadow pigment will appear truer in color as well, as the primer neutralizes discoloration of the eyelid.

Pressed Powder Foundations

Using a liquid or powder-based foundation that provides either a satin or matte finish is best for oily skin. Our Pressed Powder Foundation has light-refracting qualities that diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while allowing your skin to breathe. It will give you a natural, even finish that will last all day!
