Winter Survival Guide: How To Fight Wrinkles

With lower humidity, higher winds and colder temperatures, winter weather is not our friend, especially to our skin. It often leads to dryness and roughness, in addition to making our skin more susceptible to damage. During exposure to extreme temperatures, your skin loses water, ultimately making it dry, flaky and wrinkled. Although winter weather is inevitable, there are ways to help protect your skin from it’s damaging effects and to help keep your skin healthy and radiant. 

1. Apply Sunscreen

Many believe that you only need to UV protection in the summer, when the temperatures are high and your exposure to UVA/UVB rays increases. Although during the winter, the strength of the sun’s UVB rays slightly decrease, the UVA rays remain constant throughout the seasons. Snow can also reflect up to 80% of the sun’s rays, making a broad-spectrum sunscreen just as essential in the winter, as it is in the summer. Applying sunscreen should be the final step in your morning skin care regimen!

2. Moisturize, Hydrate, Repeat

As stated in last week’s blog, Hydration vs. Moisturizing, moisturizers and hydrators both tackle the importance of making sure our skin is getting the proper amount of moisture, in order to prevent environmental damage, signs of aging, and of course, dryness. It is important to use both in order to maintain healthy skin, especially in the dryer air. Choosing a moisturizer or hydrator that addresses our specific skin type and sensitivity level is important, in order to give our skin exactly what it needs. 

3. Check Your Products’ Ingredients

Some skin care products contain harmful ingredients, such as added colors, synthetic fragrances and other irritants that can dry out your skin. It is important to read the label on your products, in order to make sure you are using what is best for your skin, especially during the winter months. 

4. Even More Hydration?

Aside from hydrating your skin with topical products, drinking as much water as you possibly can will also help keep your skin cells hydrated.

Hydration vs. Moisturizing

We so often choose skin care and makeup products that moisturize and hydrate our skin, as we know that especially during the colder months, it is important to be sure our skin has enough water. Although the words hydrate and moisturize are often used interchangeably, they do not mean the same thing. While they do both provide our skin with nourishment, knowing the difference between the two will help us make a better decision, depending on our skin’s specific needs. 

What Is The Difference?

Moisturizers and hydrators both tackle the importance of making sure our skin is getting the proper amount of moisture, in order to prevent environmental damage, signs of aging, and of course, dryness. How they go about achieving this result, however, is the true difference.

Naturally, our skin has a barrier that protects itself from damage and water loss. Those that are prone to having dry skin usually aren’t producing enough cells in order to form this protective barrier. This makes it hard for the skin to lock in moisture. Moisturizers would then help trap natural oils on the surface of your skin, in order to maintain a healthy balance of moisture. 

On the other hand, hydration refers to the amount of water in the skin, not just on the surface. Therefore, hydrators deliver moisture down to the skin’s layers. An easy way to remember is dehydrated skin lacks water, and therefore would require hydration while dry skin lacks oil and needs to be moisturized.

What Do I Need?

Your skin needs both moisturizers and hydrators to maintain it’s health. Hydrating is what makes our skin soft, but if there is no oil on the surface to protect this hydration from evaporating, then it is not doing any good. Dry skin that is hydrated, yet not moisturized, will still flake. Conversely, if you’re applying a moisturizer and providing oil to the surface in order to smooth your skin, it is still lacking in hydration, which ultimately is what makes your skin soft.

It is important to choose a hydrator and moisturizer that works with your skin type and level of sensitivity. Hyaluronic acid is a crucial ingredient for hydrating. At-Home Hair Tips From My Stylist

Not only is maintaining healthy and shiny hair beneficial for your personal hygiene, which affects overall health, but when you’re hair looks good, you definitely feel good! It is no secret that our “bad hair days” can affect our moods and overall confidence. It is important to maintain a daily hair care regimen to go along with your skin care regimen that we hope you have perfected by now! 
We had a chance to speak with Ashley, a stylist at Reflections Hair Studio & Spa, who specializes in new color and highlighting trends, as well as nail care. Ashley gave us a little insight on her favorite H&H Science Hair Care product, as well as some tips for at-home hair care!

Q:  What is your favorite H&H Science Hair Care product?
