How To: Aging By Decade

As we age and our bodies change, our skin care products should change too. The same cleanser you used in your 20s might not work as well on your skin when you are in your 30s. During different stages of life, we have certain skin conditions and concerns. It is important to be aware of your skin during these phases, and use products that are applicable to your skin type and concerns.

20s

In your 20s, you can still get acne breakouts, especially if this is something you struggled with as a teen. Cleansing and moisturizing are pivotal in your skin care routine, as well as taking the steps to prevent acne. Although fine lines and wrinkles may not be of concern, it is a good time to start preventing aging before it is too late. Adding retinol to your nighttime routine works wonders in preventing both acne and aging. This vitamin A derivative can help prevent and treat clogged pores, while exfoliating excess pigment and sunspots, as well as building new elastin and collagen. Your 20s is also a good time to begin making sunscreen a habit. Applying it as your last step of your routine in the morning will help prevent photoaging and the development of fine lines and dark spots (as well as preventing skin cancer of course).

30s

In your 30s, aging starts to creep up. Not only does your career and personal life get more intense and hectic, but your once youthful skin now has a few fainted laugh lines and dark spots. While your 30s is a great time, it is also a lot of work. Although this stress does have an affect on your skin, but there are still chances to fight these early signs of aging. By now, you’ve hopefully got cleaning, moisturizing and protecting your skin with sunscreen daily down pat. Now, adding in a mix of exfoliation twice a week will keep your skin clear and smooth. As stress may be at an all-time high, the skin under your eyes is usually the first area to show signs of poor skin health and stress. Adding an eye cream to your routine will help boost collagen and elastin production.

40s

By the time you hit your 40s, your skin is a reflection of your skin care routine over the past few decades. The hormones and stress from your 30s carry into your 40s, while noticeable signs of aging begin to appear. Luckily, there are still ways to keep your skin concerns under control. Continuing to apply sunscreen during your morning routine is crucial, as sun exposure is a top cause of aging. Beginning to use a prescription-strength retinol, if you haven’t already, is also important, as it helps even out skin tones and stimulates the collagen in your skin. In your 40s, your skin may begin to have a certain dullness to it. Hydration is key to improving this concern, as using moisturizers and serums will help give the healthy look you are striving for.

50s

In your 50s, sagging and thinning skin begin to surface. The hormone decline that comes along with menopause creates a drastic change to our skin and body, making it essential that you consider maintaining your skin’s health as top priority. Dryness is also a common condition in your 50s, so using products that are infused with antioxidants and humectants will keep your skin nourished and radiant. Using a retinol during your nighttime routine promotes collagen production and cell turnover, helping to slow down the aging process. Therefore, no matter what product you choose, make sure you’re looking for two things: collagen production and hydration!

60s+

In your 60s, your skin becomes more sensitive than before, so using harsher prescription-strength products should be taken down a notch, by either switching to a gentler product or reducing the amount of times you use it. The sagging, thinning and dry skin from your 50s will continue in your 60s and beyond, therefore repairing and hydrating will remain crucial. Preventing additional sagging by using a hardworking serum can be helpful, using this product on your neck and chest as well. While we want to achieve younger-looking skin, and ‘trick’ people into thinking we are a decade younger than we are, it is far more important to be sure that you are maintaining beautiful and healthy skin that you are confident in.

As I am sure you noticed retinol was discussed in almost every decade as an important product for your skin: don’t forget that our Retinol Plus Youthful Peel Kits will be on sale this week- August 29th – 31st. This high-strength, two-step peel kit delivers noticeable anti-aging and skin smoothing benefits, and improves the appearance of pigmentation, fine lines and texture. It also enhances the tone and texture of your skin, while unclogging pores and promoting a healthy radiance.

Your daily skin care essentials that are included in your anti-aging kit as outlined by the H&H Science Youthful Skin Care Pyramid

The Foundation of the Pyramid- Protection bbcream

As you can see in the pyramid illustration, the foundation of any great skin care regimen is protection. Dr. Helen Torok and I recommend the daily use of a medical grade SPF 50+ or higher that provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB coverage and offers a physical block. My personal favorite is our H&H Science Tinted Brightening BB Cream with SPF 50+. I apply it every morning as the last step in my skin care regimen before I apply my make-up. The universal tint provides a more flawless finish and is a great make-up primer.

The Second Layer of the Pyramid- Repair retinols

The second layer of the pyramid is focused on repairing the skin through the daily use of a medical grade retinol treatment. Medical grade Vitamin A, otherwise noted as retinol, repairs past damage and is touted as the gold standard for anti-aging. It retexturizes the surface of the skin making it feel and appear smoother, tightens the pores and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The Third Level of the Pyramid- Treat dermalcbright

The third level of the pyramid is focused on ensuring that the skin is getting the appropriate daily dose of antioxidants. The most essential antioxidant is Vitamin C. The medical grade form of Vitamin C in our H&H Science products effectively stimulates collagen and elastin. This tightens and firms the skin and provides a healthy, radiant glow. Vitamin C is also a natural photo-protectant and when worn daily in the morning with a sunscreen can increase the effectiveness of your sunscreen. Think of it like your morning “orange juice” for your skin.

The Top of the Pyramid- Stimulate superrich

Our Anti-Aging Kits also include our most potent anti-aging moisturizer that includes humectants, emollients, stem cells and peptides to target fine lines and wrinkles, lock in hydration, stimulate collagen and provide for a more youthful appearance. The H&H Science Enriched Super Rich Moisturizer should be used in the evening after your Retinol Treatment and in the morning after your Vitamin C Treatment.

Summarizing Your Essentials

The first three layers of the pyramid are considered the essentials of a great skin care regimen and everyone should be using these on a daily basis. Daily use of your SPF 50+, retinol, vitamin c treatment and eye cream will ensure that your skin is healthy and radiant. Think of it like brushing your teeth. We brush our teeth usually at least two times a day to maintain good oral hygiene. So, why would we not treat our skin twice daily to ensure that it receives the nutrients it needs to be healthy and radiant? Take our Anti-Aging Quiz at www.hhscience.com today and start using the Anti-photoaging system for your skin type now that includes your daily essentials and you will be on your way to younger, more radiant skin!
