Why Your Skin Is Worse In The Winter

While most of us try our hardest to bundle up and protect ourselves from the cold winter air, we must also remember that the wintertime can have damaging effects on our skin and health. During the winter months, our skin is drained of its moisture, which is vital to our skin’s health. The summer glow we worked so hard to get quickly turns into a dull appearance, while the lack of hydration can also cause dryer skin and more wrinkles.

So, why might your skin be worse in the winter than it was in the summer? And what can you do to help fix these issue?

1. You are using the same cleanser on your skin that you used during the summer

While it is necessary to switch from a regular moisturizer in the summer to one that is ultra-hydrating in the winter, the same goes for your cleanser. Winter is a good time to switch to a gentle cleanser that won’t strip away your skin’s moisture. Finding a cleanser that hydrates while it cleanses is the best option for your daily regimen in the winter season.

2. You are taking long, hot showers

While taking a long, hot shower after being out in the frigid air sounds appealing, it is better to keep your showers shorter in the winter. The water does not moisturize your skin. It actually strips your skin of its natural oils. 

3. You are not moisturizing enough

Hydrating your skin often and regularly during the winter months will help fight against aging. It is especially important to apply right when you first come out of the shower or bath. Moisturizer spreads easily on damp skin and it will help replenish the moisture lost during your shower.

4. You are not applying sunscreen

5. You are not exfoliating

Winter Survival Guide: How To Fight Wrinkles

With lower humidity, higher winds and colder temperatures, winter weather is not our friend, especially to our skin. It often leads to dryness and roughness, in addition to making our skin more susceptible to damage. During exposure to extreme temperatures, your skin loses water, ultimately making it dry, flaky and wrinkled. Although winter weather is inevitable, there are ways to help protect your skin from it’s damaging effects and to help keep your skin healthy and radiant. 

1. Apply Sunscreen

Many believe that you only need to UV protection in the summer, when the temperatures are high and your exposure to UVA/UVB rays increases. Although during the winter, the strength of the sun’s UVB rays slightly decrease, the UVA rays remain constant throughout the seasons. Snow can also reflect up to 80% of the sun’s rays, making a broad-spectrum sunscreen just as essential in the winter, as it is in the summer. Applying sunscreen should be the final step in your morning skin care regimen!

2. Moisturize, Hydrate, Repeat

As stated in last week’s blog, Hydration vs. Moisturizing, moisturizers and hydrators both tackle the importance of making sure our skin is getting the proper amount of moisture, in order to prevent environmental damage, signs of aging, and of course, dryness. It is important to use both in order to maintain healthy skin, especially in the dryer air. Choosing a moisturizer or hydrator that addresses our specific skin type and sensitivity level is important, in order to give our skin exactly what it needs. 

3. Check Your Products’ Ingredients

Some skin care products contain harmful ingredients, such as added colors, synthetic fragrances and other irritants that can dry out your skin. It is important to read the label on your products, in order to make sure you are using what is best for your skin, especially during the winter months.

How To: Aging By Decade

As we age and our bodies change, our skin care products should change too. The same cleanser you used in your 20s might not work as well on your skin when you are in your 30s. During different stages of life, we have certain skin conditions and concerns. It is important to be aware of your skin during these phases, and use products that are applicable to your skin type and concerns.

20s

In your 20s, you can still get acne breakouts, especially if this is something you struggled with as a teen. Cleansing and moisturizing are pivotal in your skin care routine, as well as taking the steps to prevent acne. Although fine lines and wrinkles may not be of concern, it is a good time to start preventing aging before it is too late. Adding retinol to your nighttime routine works wonders in preventing both acne and aging. This vitamin A derivative can help prevent and treat clogged pores, while exfoliating excess pigment and sunspots, as well as building new elastin and collagen. Your 20s is also a good time to begin making sunscreen a habit. 30s

40s
