5 Tips for Smooth Skin

Over time, many factors are to blame for the loss of your skin’s smoothness, such as stress, rays from the sun, pollution, dehydration, or even just aging. Not only can these factors affect the smoothness of your skin, but it also makes it more susceptible to wrinkles, age spots, bruises, rough or dry patches, blemishes and a loss of elasticity. Although it is an impossible task for us to regain the baby-soft skin from our childhood, there are still ways to get smoother and healthier skin as an adult.

1.  Start from within

Antioxidants are crucial to combat loss of collagen, premature aging and other health concerns. Adding berries and subtracting sugary treats will aid in improving the visible signs of aging, and help to reveal a more youthful appearance. Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential for smooth and radiant skin.

2. Practice a healthy lifestyle

Regular physical activity helps regulate the hormones that are significant in your skin, prevents free-radical damage, while also reducing inflammation. Other than exercise, it is important to get seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. This rejuvenates not only your body, but your skin as well.

3. Stick to a cleansing routine

Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize. Remove makeup with a gentle cleanser, followed by a toner to remove any dirt, oil, cleanser or makeup left behind, and then moisturize. You only need to exfoliate your skin once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and increase collagen production. It is important to also note that over-washing can cause excess oil production, which can lead to breakouts.

4. Hydrate your skin

Using creams and serums with antioxidants, vitamins A, C, and E help nourish your skin, leaving it healthier looking and smooth.

5. Take your vitamins

While the vitamins in your skincare products are important, it is also essential that you are putting vitamins and minerals into your body as well. Vitamins A, C, D and E work from the inside to clear and nourish the skin, while protecting it from a wide variety of skin issues. H&H Science’s Anti-Aging Formula is formulated to help maintain a youthful and healthier appearance, as well as providing other anti-aging benefits.

4 Important Places You Aren’t Protecting From Sun (But Should)

Although you may already be aware of the importance of sunscreen, and its many benefits, as it reduces your risk of melanoma and other types of skin cancer, it is important to also realize when to apply, where to apply, and how often. Most of the time, we only apply sunscreen on areas that we assume get the most sun exposure, often forgetting about those hard-to-reach areas. But here’s the thing: Melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, can appear anywhere on the body, including areas we neglect to protect from the sun—like our lips, the top of our ears and even the soles of our feet. By making sure you cover all your bases, and applying sunscreen to every exposed area of skin, you significantly decrease the threat of melanoma and other types of skin cancer. To help you with this, here are the four places you tend to miss protecting your skin from the sun, but are unquestionably important to cover.

1. Lips

In order to protect your lips, try using a gloss or balm that has SPF. This will help protect your lips from UV damage, as the most common types of  nonmelanomaskin cancer often occur on our lips.

Try: Vibran-C Lip Treatment SPF 15

2. Scalp

Although protecting your scalp is more prevalent in men with thinning hair, those with long or thick hair are still vulnerable to melanoma. Wearing caps and wide-brimmed hats during prolonged sun exposure allow you to protect your scalp (and look stylish, of course)!

3. Face

According to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, a 2013 survey revealed that only 30 percent of women apply sunscreen on their face and other exposed skin regularly. Considering that 70 percent of basal cell carcinoma occur on the face, this statistic is scary. Applying sunscreen to your face, or brightening cream with SPF, is pivotal when being out in the sun.

Try: Tinted Brightening BB Cream SPF 50+

4. Eyelids

This may seem like an odd spot to protect from the sun, but eyelids are another common site for nonmelanoma skin cancer. Many skip this area, as some sunscreens may leave a stinging sensation on your eye. In order to protect your eyelids, try using makeup or primer with SPF, aiding in protecting your face overall, including your eyelids.

Try: Retexturizing Face Primer SPF 20

7 Things You Should Be Doing Every Day for Clear Skin

Clear skin is something that we all strive for. Not only does your skin impact your self-confidence, but it also influences your social habits, psyche and can trigger anxiety. With so many factors working against us—pollution, hormones and other pore-clogging elements, accomplishing the task of clear and blemish-free skin may seem somewhat impossible. Although there are so many harmful skin aggressors surrounding our daily lives, there are, thankfully, a few lifestyle changes that can get your skin back on track. According to dermatologists, here are the top skin care tips to achieve healthy and clear skin.

1. Use an Appropriate Facial Cleanser for your Skin

With so many different cleansers being advertised everywhere we look, it is important that you chose one that is beneficial for your skin type. Whether you have dry, oily, combination or sensitive skin, you must take this into consideration when selecting your everyday facial cleanser. Doing so allows the right balance of ingredients to work its magic and cleanse your skin efficiently and effectively.

2. Use a Sonic Cleansing System

Along with the appropriate facial cleanser for your skin type, using a sonic cleansing system takes off more makeup, bacteria and dirt from your skin, compared to just using the cleanser alone. It provides a deep clean and exfoliates your skin’s surface, leaving your face smoother and softer, ultimately influencing a clearer complexion.

3. Apply Retinoids Before Bed

Retinoids provide a plethora of benefits for your skin, including evening out discoloration and brightening skin tone, reducing wrinkles, preventing fine lines and unclogging pores in order to make them look smaller and reduce acne. Applying a retinoid, which best for those who do not have ultra-sensitive skin,  as part of your nighttime skin care routine can help reduce fine lines, unclog pores and even out your skin tone,  in order to create clearer and healthier-looking skin.

Try: Retinol Plus Smoothing Serum

4. Get a Good Night Sleep

Although we all love sleeping, it isn’t as easy to get the amount sleep as we need in a given night. When you are sleeping, your skin restores itself. Therefore, lack of sleep can lead to a more tired-looking complexion, puffy under-eye bags, dark circles and even breakouts. Creating a nighttime routine that is conducive to relaxing and getting your body ready for a good night sleep can significantly help not only the ease of falling asleep, but also staying asleep through the night.

5. Always Use Sunscreen

While using sunscreen every day and applying it generously is important, many sunscreens are oil-based, which can clog your pores and create new blemishes. Finding a sunscreen that works with your skin type and protects you from not only the sun, but from blemishes as well, is actually easier than you think. Make sure to also choose an SPF that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays.

Try: H&H Science Sheer Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF 50+

6. Avoiding Picking, Popping and Poking

We know—it’s hard to resist the urge to pop your pimples. Although this probably isn’t your first time hearing this, a little reminder will hopefully do the trick. Don’t pick, poke or pop your pimples. If you have a blemish that you are desperate to pop, try using a spot treatment or cream instead. Popping will only do harm, while spot treatments are designed to clear existing blemishes and prevent future blemishes from forming.

Try: H&H Science Spot Treatment Gel

7. Use a Toner

If your morning and evening skin care routines don’t already include using a toner, today is the day to start. Choosing a toner with glycolic acid or salicylic acid unclog your pores for clearer skin. Toners can also balance your skin’s natural pH levels, while soothing your complexion and minimizing breakouts.

Try: Salicylic Treatment Pads
